How to Approach God in Prayer |
Suggestions from Navigators 2:7 Series, Course 2
- Wait on the Lord -- Don't hurry, just seek the Lord. Isaiah 40:31 promises that those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength. Psalm 62:5 says, "My soul, wait only upon God; for my expectation is from Him." Realize his presence; ponder the impossibility of being anywhere in the universe where He is not. Psalm 139
- Confession -- Wait on Him also for cleansing. Psalm 139 Asks God to search the heart and expose the evil thoughts to see if there is any wicked way in you. I John 1:9 says that if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.
- Worship or Adoration -- Psalms 103, 111, and 145 are wonderful portions to follow in learning how to praise God. Also use Revelation 4 and 5 to pray Scripture back to the Lord. Write down other verses that you come across while having your quiet time that can be used in you own personal worship. Sometimes using songs to guide your thoughts is helpful. You can use recorded music as well as a hymnbook.
- Thanksgiving -- Reflect upon the wonderful things God has done for you and thank Him for these - your salvation, family, friends, and opportunities. Go beyond the routine daily expressions. Think!
- Petition -- Now is the time to remember people who are important to you, and to call out their names before our great God. Ask specific things for them that you know they need. Pray some Scripture prayer for them like the first and third chapters of Ephesians, or the first chapter of Philippians and Colossians. Avoid the indefinite "Lord bless" prayers, and be courageously specific, so you will know when they have been answered.
