Why a Month of Prayer?

Southern Gables has developed a guide to assist the congregation in a month of prayer for the people and ministries of our church. We have adapted the guide to our website so that you may use it as a basis for your daily prayer.

"If we were really convinced that prayer changes the way God acts, and that God does bring about remarkable changes in the world in response to prayer, as scripture repeatedly teaches that he does, then we would pray much more than we do. If we pray little, it is probably because we do not really believe that prayer accomplishes much at all."  Systematic Theology - Wayne Grudem

Gods Word Instructs Us To Pray

"You do not have, because you do not ask God." James 4:2b

"Pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not put out the Spirit's fire" 1 Thessalonians 5:17-19

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." Ephesians 6:18

"An ordinary simple Christian kneels down to say his prayers. . . . But if he is a Christian, he knows that what is prompting him to pray is also God: God, so to speak, inside him. But he also knows that all his real knowledge of God comes through Christ, the man who was God-that Christ is standing beside him, helping him to pray, praying for him. You see what is happening. God is the thing to which he is praying-the goal he is trying to reach. God is also the thing inside him which is pushing him on-the motive power. God is also the road or bridge along which he is being pushed to that goal. So that the whole threefold life of the three-personal Being is actually going on in that ordinary little bedroom where an ordinary man is saying his prayers."  C. S. Lewis (1898-1963)

How To Use This Guide

There are three components to this prayer guide: Daily prayer, articles on prayer and prayer for our pastors and missionaries.

First - Daily Prayer        Today's Prayers

Jesus taught his disciples to pray in a certain way by giving them an example through the "Lord's Prayer".

  • Jesus taught us to praise God first, for who He is and how He has called us to be His children.
  • He taught us to not only ask God for our needs each day but to thank him for everything we receive from Him.
  • He also taught us to confess our sins and to forgive others as God has forgiven us.
  • He taught us to petition God for protection, for the needs of others and for our friends and family that may not yet know Jesus as Lord and Savior.

This prayer guide highlights Waiting on the Lord, Confession, Worship, Thanksgiving, and Petition.

A specific Bible verse is highlighted each day to give us an example of how to pray, listen to what God's Word is saying to us and follow Jesus' example in prayer. A guided prayer is provided for you to meditate on and pray.

Each day has a specific focus on ministry with prayer requests for that specific ministry and the people involved. We encourage you to add some of your own requests. Pray for those situations and people for whom God has prompted you to pray for. Pray for those people on your "Most Wanted" list. Pray for the needs in your life and for your family.

Second -- Articles on Prayer

Below are links to several articles on prayer that can instruct and motivate you as you seek the Lord each month. They can also be displayed from the links in the left column of each page.

Third -- Pray for our Pastors and Missionaries

We have included prayer requests for each Southern Gables Pastor and each Missionary family. These will be periodically updated to reflect the most recent needs and prayer requests for these people.
